THIS MONTH'S SPEAKER IS BETTY SIEGEL
Dr. Betty Siegel, president emeritus of Kennesaw State University in Georgia, has been logging many miles in her retirement, in many cases to promote and help implement First-Year academies. She spent three months in South Africa and most recently traveled to Hawaii to attend the 20th International Conference for the First-Year Experience. Long a proponent of diversity before it became part of higher education’s lexicon, Siegel says, “Diversity is ethics in action. It’s ethical to treat people as equals, to believe that everyone has untapped potential, that all of us are able, valuable and responsible and should be treated accordingly.”
Dr Betty Siegel is the chair of the Distinguished chair of the Siegel Institute for Leadership, Ethics and Character and President Emeritus at Kennesaw University. She was the first woman to head and institution in the 35 unit University System of Georgia and was the longest serving woman president of a public university in the nation serving from 1981 to 2006. Under her administration Kennesaw State grew from 4000 students with 15 baccalaureate-degree programs to 18,000 student University with 55 baccalaureate and graduate degree programs. Dr Siegel is a longtime member and former chair of the Board of Directors of the American Association of state colleges and universities (AASCU). She serves on the commission on Women in Higher Education as well as numerous corporate and community Boards. Dr Betty Siegel and her husband Joel who reside in East Cobb have two sons who are professors and two grandsons.
