THIS MONTH'S SPEAKER IS KIMBERLY B. MCCOY
Ms. McCoy has been the Director of the Victim Witness Unit for the District Attorney’s Office in Cobb County since April, 1999. The Victim Witness Unit is responsible for assisting victims and witnesses throughout their involvement with the criminal justice system. Ms. McCoy is responsible for all administrative duties of the Unit, direct victim services, and the supervision of staff. Ms. McCoy also maintains a caseload providing services to victims of crime involved in capital cases and some high profile cases.
Ms. McCoy was appointed by Governor Sonny Perdue to Georgia’s Sex Offender Registry Review Board in 2007 and serves as a board member for YWCA of Northwest Georgia. She is currently a member of the Faculty for the State of Georgia Victim Assistance Academy. She is also a member of the Cobb County SANE/SART Committee, the Advisory Board for the Social Work Program of Kennesaw State University, the Cobb Collaborative, the Cobb County Law Enforcement Association, the Cobb County Domestic Violence Task Force, and the Cobb Coalition for Child Abuse Prevention. Ms. McCoy has previously served on the Board of Directors for the Cherokee Family Violence Center, as an officer of the Cherokee County Family Violence Task Force, on the Board of Directors for the Anna Crawford Center for Children, and as training coordinator for the Cobb Coalition for Child Abuse Prevention. Ms. McCoy has been active with numerous other community committees and was a founding member of the steering committee that developed and implemented the SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) Program in Cobb County – a program that provides specialized forensic exams and support services for victims of sexual assault. Ms. McCoy has been active with the legislation, presenting crime victim-related information to several committees and most recently working with the Prosecuting Attorney’s Council on the passage of the Crime Victims Restitution Act of 2005.
Prior to the current position, Ms. McCoy was the Project Director for the Cobb District Attorney’s Office Domestic Violence Project from November, 1997 until April, 1999. She obtained a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Kennesaw State University and holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology from The Women’s College of Brenau University. Ms. McCoy is currently a part-time professor for the Department of Human Services at Kennesaw State University.
Personally, Ms. McCoy is President of the NorthWest Georgia Zeta Tau Alpha Alumnae Chapter and an active member of the First Baptist Church of Emerson where she is the Chair of the Personnel Committee, a member of the Benevolence Ministry Team and on the Usher/Greeter Ministry Team. She enjoys spending time with her family, particularly her nieces and nephews, reading, and visiting and traveling with friends.
